Vacuum Cupping
Although cupping has become something of a trend lately, there are written records of this technique being used in China as early as 200-300 A.D. Today, cupping is mainly recommended for the treatment of pain, gastro-intestinal disorders, lung diseases and paralysis, though it can be used for other disorders as well.
A vacuum is created in glass or plastic cups which are applied to your skin at areas of pain or discomfort. Sometimes oil is applied first, allowing the cups to slide across the surface of your body. Cupping treatment is mainly used in cases of sore muscles, pain and stiffness, especially in the shoulders and back. It can literally suck out the tension, soreness and stiffness. Cupping is also used in the treatment of chronic cough, asthma, and some gastro-intestinal disorders, and is generally applied as part of an acupuncture or massage treatment.
The effects of cupping include: stretching of skin and deep lying tissues, restoration of proper blood flow including improved microcirculation, and relief of blood and fluid stagnation.
